The issue

As a resident of Townsville City, I have experienced firsthand the discomfort and health risks associated with secondhand smoke. Our city deserves to have smoke-free places where people can walk, shop, and enjoy the area without breathing in harmful fumes. Therefore, I am calling for Flinders Street, parts of Townsville CBD including Stokes Street Mall, as well as the entire Strand pathway to be declared completely smoke-free zones under Queensland Health legislation.

Secondhand smoke is not just a nuisance; it's a serious health risk. According to Cancer Council Australia, secondhand smoke contains more than 7000 chemicals with at least 69 known to cause cancer. It can lead to heart disease, stroke and lung cancer among non-smokers. Children exposed are at increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, ear problems and more severe asthma.

By making these areas completely smoke-free zones we would not only improve air quality but also protect public health especially that of our children who are most vulnerable to its effects. This move would align us with other cities across Australia that have already implemented similar measures.

Let's make our beloved city healthier for everyone - residents and visitors alike - by eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke in public spaces. Please sign this petition urging our local government officials to implement enforceable no-smoking zones within Townsville City under Queensland Health legislation.
