IMPLEMENT “SAVANNA’S LAW” & “PUBLIC CHAPTER 511” NATIONWIDE!
The Issue
As a survivor of domestic abuse/violence myself; I've endured countless incidents that have left me scarred, traumatized and forever changed. The continuous cycle of abuse I, and so many others have endured at the hands of those who claimed to love us, is heartbreaking and infuriating but is ALSO, preventable…If, and ONLY IF, we take action NOW. One major step in the right direction is the implementation of “Savanna’s law” on a national scale. “Savanna’s Law” which was first implemented in Tennessee on January 1st 2026, aims to hold those CONVICTED of 2 or more domestic violence related crimes, accountable by requiring them to register their offenses within a nationwide database. This means that if a person was previously convicted of one or more domestic violence related crimes PRIOR to January 1st, 2026 when the law took effect in Tennessee, and any time following 01/01/26, they received ANOTHER CONVICTION of a domestic violence related crime, that is then cause for them to be required to register. This would function similarly to sex offender registries, providing protection, awareness and peace of mind to potential victims and society as a whole. It's an essential move towards safeguarding individuals at risk of falling into the hands of repeat offenders. Statistics show that domestic violence has reached epidemic levels, affecting 1 in 3 women and 1 in 9 men in their lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. These alarming numbers are not just figures; they represent real people suffering daily. Immediate action is necessary to prevent this scourge from claiming more lives. With a national database of domestic violence offenders, law enforcement agencies, legal sellers of firearms, service providers, and the general public can be more informed, leading to faster, proactive measures to keep potential victims safe. It enables a unified front in addressing gender-based violence, streamlining efforts across various states and communities. Furthermore, implementing this law would act as a significant deterrent. Offenders would be aware of the significant repercussions of their actions, possibly preventing future offenses. Survivors like myself would find solace in knowing that there is a system in place working towards our protection and well-being. PUBLIC CHAPTER 511: In relation to Savanna's Law, “Public Chapter 511” was implemented alongside of Savanna’s Law on January 1st, 2026 in Tennessee, now makes it MANDATORY for ANY and ALL person(s) who are convicted of any of the following crimes; (domestic violence/domestic assault, child abuse/neglect/endangerment and/or any form of animal cruelty), to undergo a clinical psychological evaluation which is required to be conducted on an outpatient basis and administered only by a QMHP (Qualified Mental Health Professional). Public Chapter 511 has been implemented in an attempt to diagnose and treat any underlying mental health issues. And as a mental health advocate, I believe strongly in spreading educational awareness to end the stigma surrounding mental illness. Truth be told, it is INCREDIBLY likely that repeat offenders of any of the crimes mentioned above, have some form of mental illness which played a factor in their abnormal, unacceptable and inexcusable behavior and actions. The intent and purpose of Public Chapter 511, is to hopefully drastically decrease the number of repeat offenders by providing psychological intervention via the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues that weren’t detected prior. Join me in demanding that our legislators prioritize this vital issue and make “Savanna’s law” a reality nationwide. Every signature counts and brings us one step closer to a safer future for victims and survivors of domestic violence. Please sign this petition and be a part of the change needed to protect those vulnerable to domestic abuse.
