Implement Safety Measures on Chesterfield Bridges to Prevent Further Suicide Attempts

The Issue

I am a resident of Chesterfield, deeply affected by the rising mental health crisis in our community. Personal experience with depression and suicidal ideation has made me acutely aware of the urgent need for immediate assistance and prevention measures. In just three weeks, our town has witnessed three suicide attempts involving individuals contemplating jumping off bridges. This is a heart-breaking reality that we cannot ignore.

Suicide rates have been increasing globally, and according to the World Health Organisation, close to 800,000 people die due to suicide every year. It's a significant public health problem that requires comprehensive preventive strategies.

We are calling on local councils to take decisive action by implementing safety measures on these bridges - such as installing higher railings or safety nets - which have been proven effective in other cities around the world. Additionally, it is crucial that information relevant for individuals experiencing suicidal ideation be readily available at these locations.

By doing so, we can create an environment where those struggling with their mental health feel supported and understood rather than isolated and hopeless. We believe this can be a vital step towards preventing further loss of life in our community.

Although the government say they have plans and strategies in place, something needs to be done NOW.

Please sign this petition if you agree that urgent action is needed from our local councils to safeguard lives in Chesterfield.
