Implement ranked choice voting and the congressional district method in Tennessee.

Implement ranked choice voting and the congressional district method in Tennessee.

The Issue

In our cherished democratic process, every voter should have their voice heard and counted. As a resident of Tennessee, I have witnessed too often how our current election system—relying on an all-or-nothing winner-take-all approach—leaves many voters feeling unheard and disenfranchised. It's time to change this and ensure that every voter truly has a voice.

What if we could have a system that accounts for everyone's preference, not just their top choice? Ranked choice voting (RCV) presents this opportunity. Implementing RCV for presidential, Senate, House, and state-level primaries and general elections in Tennessee will provide a more fair, democratic process by allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference. This ensures that even if a voter's top choice doesn't win, their second or third choice still has a chance to play a role, giving voters a more meaningful and impactful say in the election outcome.

Additionally, the Congressional District Method offers an augmented way to utilize the Electoral College in presidential elections, allocating votes in alignment with how individual districts vote, rather than a monolithic statewide outcome. This would result in outcomes that more accurately reflect the will of the people in Tennessee.

The benefits of switching to ranked choice voting and adopting the Congressional District Method for the Electoral College are profound. RCV promotes more civility and cooperation among candidates, as they strive to be the second or third choices of their competitors' supporters. It encourages a more comprehensive debate of issues rather than divisive, negative campaigning. Moreover, states that have adopted RCV have reported smoother electoral processes satisfying both voters and officials.

Currently, our system perpetuates polarization, leaving many to feel like their vote is wasted if it doesn't go to the candidate with the most votes. In contrast, RCV boosts voter satisfaction and turnout, as citizens feel their vote has a more tangible impact. Maine has successfully implemented RCV and its positive impact is evident there.

By advocating for the implementation of ranked choice voting and the Congressional District Method in Tennessee, we're pushing for a more democratic, inclusive election process. This is about empowering every Tennessee voter, making our elections about choice, voice, and representation.

Join us in urging the Tennessee state legislature to take the necessary steps to adopt ranked choice voting and the Congressional District Method. Let's make our elections fair and ensure every vote truly counts. Sign this petition and help us pave the way for a fairer electoral process in Tennessee.
