Implement Proportional Representation in Place of First-Past-the-Post Voting System

The Issue

Our current electoral system disconnects many voters from true democratic representation. Many smaller parties have more overall votes than larger parties, yet they gain fewer seats after the count. This disheartening reality personally motivates me, as it questions the fairness of our democracy.

The first-past-the-post voting system not only undermines the principle of proportionate representation, but it also restricts political diversity by marginalizing smaller parties. If we adopt a proportional representation system, every vote will matter, regardless of where it is cast. In many European democracies, such as Germany and Sweden, proportional representation has improved governance by fostering a more inclusive political landscape.

The Electoral Reform Society’s 2017 report revealed that the 2017 General Election would have been significantly different with proportional representation, demonstrating 21 more seats for smaller parties. This shows how a shift to proportional representation can enhance political plurality and breed healthier competition within our democracy.

Our voices deserve to be heard, and our votes should matter equitably. It's time to update our electoral system to reflect the diverse views of our modern society. Please, join me in urging the government to implement a proportional representation system. Sign this petition for a more just and inclusive democracy.
