Implement Minimum Wage for Nursing Students in Clinical Placements

The Issue

I am a second-year nursing student in Canada, and like many others, I am required to complete clinical placements as part of my education. These placements are often full-time commitments, leaving little room for part-time jobs or other sources of income. However, we are not compensated for this crucial component of our training.

In 2019, there were over 30,000 nursing students enrolled in Canadian universities who were potentially facing the same financial strain (Statistics Canada). This number does not even include those studying at colleges across the country. We dedicate countless hours to our studies and placements with no financial recognition. The hours spent in placement centres are mandatory and shifts are non-negotiable for the completion of the program. These hours are still unpaid, despite the fact that students often perform tasks similar to those of paid staff members.

The lack of compensation during these clinical placements puts an unnecessary burden on us - students who are already dealing with the high costs of tuition and living expenses. It also devalues the important work we do during these placements where we provide essential care to patients.

We propose that nursing students be paid at least minimum wage for their time spent in clinical placement centres. Compensating for the travel, parking fees, and courses needed to go to these facilities which are not covered. This would not only alleviate some financial stress but also acknowledge the valuable contribution these future nurses make to patient care during their training period.

Join me in calling on Member of Parliament, Blaine Calkins and educational across Canada to implement a minimum wage pay for nursing students going to clinical placement centres. Your signature is greatly appreciated!
