Every time I see the news of a car accident, it's a reminder that these tragic incidents occur daily, taking the lives of innocent people. As we age our cognitive functions such as reaction time and decision-making abilities decline. These functions have been identified as key culprits of car accidents. As a concerned citizen, I am deeply troubled by the prospect of these preventable accidents and urge the implementation of mandatory retesting for drivers aged 65 and above. Research has shown that older drivers tend to have slower reaction times than younger drivers, contributing to a higher risk of accidents (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). With an aging population, we must adapt our policies to ensure that everyone on the road is as safe as possible. By implementing a mandatory retest system for those over 65, we can mitigate the risks, promote active aging, and ensure that our roads remain a safe place for all users.
