My son, Kyron, is only six months old. He experienced severe oxygen loss during labour and, as a result, now lives with cerebral palsy. Kyron is tube fed, and it’s likely that as he grows older, he will need a wheelchair. While my heart aches for my own child, I am compelled to ensure that no other family experiences our pain.

This is why I am advocating for “Kyron’s Law" — a proposed law which will enforce safer VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) protocols across the country. VBAC carries a slight risk of uterine rupture which can lead to oxygen deprivation, and in severe cases, conditions like cerebral palsy (ACOG, 2019). By strengthening VBAC protocols, healthcare providers can better prevent these types of complications, improving the safety and wellbeing of both mother and baby during labour.

However, it's not enough to sit back and hope for change. We need action. The implementation of "Kyron’s Law" will ensure safer birth practices, and prevent the life-altering consequences that families like mine have had to face.
