Implement excision surgery for endometriosis treatment in the NHS

Implement excision surgery for endometriosis treatment in the NHS
The Issue
I am one of millions who suffer from endometriosis, and I am urging the NHS to adopt excision surgery to replace ablation as the standard treatment for this painful condition. Endometriosis affects about 1 in 10 women of reproductive age in the UK, according to the National Health Service (NHS), causing chronic pain, infertility, and significant disruptions to daily life.
Excision surgery is considered the gold standard for treating endometriosis. Unlike ablation, which burns only the visible surface of endometrial tissue, incision surgery removes the disease from its roots. This comprehensive approach drastically reduces the chances of recurrence, offering longer periods of remission and a significantly improved quality of life for sufferers. Ablation, on the other hand, often leaves the roots of the lesions intact, leading to faster regrowth and enduring pain. Ablation has a higher risk of creating scar tissue and adhesions compared to excision surgery leading to even more pain in the long run.
Currently, the NHS employs excision surgery when diagnosing endometriosis, but inexplicably switches to the less effective technique of ablation once the disease is confirmed. This practice undermines the long-term health and well-being of patients and results in repeated treatments due to the high recurrence rate associated with ablation.
Implementing incision surgery as the standard treatment for endometriosis in the NHS will not only align the UK with international best practices but will also save costs in the long run by reducing the need for repeated procedures. Numerous studies support the efficacy of excision surgery over ablation, highlighting the extended remission periods and enhanced relief from symptoms. This would also cost the NHS less in the long run, as patients would need less surgeries.
Sign this petition to support endometriosis sufferers by urging the NHS to replace ablation with excision surgery as the primary treatment method. Together, we can advocate for a change that acknowledges and addresses the real needs of those battling endometriosis, ensuring they receive the care and relief they deserve.
