The issue

CAIRNS, FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

On the afternoon of August 5, 2026, tragedy struck our community in the most heart-wrenching way possible. A young woman lost her life, her future extinguished by a horrendous accident involving a stolen vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle was a 36 year old man who had stolen it just 15 minutes previously.

Whilst this is not specifically youth crime, it does bring to a boiling point a community that is tired of stolen vehicles destroying peoples lives.

We saw over the month of July, 41 stolen vehicles.  Between 1 - 5 Aug, 15 stolen vehicles.

Most of these occured during the night, involving forced entry into homes and businesses.  Car keys, valuables, and the right to feel safe at home have been taken and lost.

This is not an isolated incident. Such avoidable tragedies have been occurring with alarming frequency, putting our community and our loved ones in peril. We saw this 21/6/26 when a stolen vehicle rolled and flipped into a ditch, killing a 12 year old boy who was in the stolen vehicle.  It is pure luck that innocent people were not injured or killed.

We propose the imposition of a mandatory curfew for youths on bail, confining them to their homes or a safe location from 10 PM to 6 AM. Implementing a curfew can significantly reduce the likelihood of nighttime offenses when many such incidents occur.  We see many vehicles stolen, many houses broken into, and rampant crime in general at night.

To achieve this, we need to urge local authorities and judicial bodies to update the current bail conditions. This would not only help protect our community but also provide a structured environment that might steer these youths away from a path of crime.

Let us not wait for another tragedy to happen. By signing this petition, you stand with us in our call for immediate legislative change to enforce a curfew for youth on bail.  Parliament can be recalled "on urgency" to debate this.

Together, we can make our communities safer and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
