Integrate CPR Certification into Westchester School Curriculums
The Issue
Guardians of the Heart is a student-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit advocating for the integration of CPR certification into the curriculum for all students in Westchester schools.
For the well-being and survival of our children, it's vital to educate them with safety knowledge such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in our county, state, country, and world, with over 436,000 cardiac arrests each year in the U.S., and of these, over 23,000 were children under the age of 18. Tragically, most of these occur outside of a hospital setting, where the survival rate is less than 10%. That figure has remained stagnant for the past 20 years. However, implementing widespread CPR education can dramatically improve survival rates. For each minute that CPR and the use of an AED is delayed, survival chances decrease by 10%. Yet, immediate CPR can triple the chance of survival.
By incorporating CPR training into school curriculums, students will be able to use these techniques in the real world whenever and wherever they may be needed. We believe CPR training will also instill a sense of responsibility and quick-thinking skills, creating a generation that is ready to take on whatever life throws their way.
Let us ensure our educational systems are both developing minds and safeguarding lives. Let us create a safer, more prepared community for all. If you feel strongly about our cause, please sign our petition. Your signature can make a difference!
