Firstly, I share this petition not as an individual distanced from the issue but someone whose loved ones have had to face uncomfortable and disturbing situations involving school staff. Foundation of our societal education - schools, should be the safest environment for our children. But the neglection of annual background checks on school staff for pedophilia charges defeats the very purpose.

According to an extensive study done by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), incidents of sexual misconduct by school personnel were far more prevalent than expected. It is an alarming fact that it's the second highest occupational group behind only law enforcement personnel, who are far more scrutinized (GAO, July 2010). Yet, we lack a comprehensive system to check and prevent such offenders from getting into our schools, let alone a mechanism to timely and financially accessible annual supervision.

Implementing these checks not only safeguards our children from dangerous individuals who have histories of such behavior, but also creates a more controlled and secure environment for learning. Our children deserve to learn without fear and uncertainty, and it is our responsibility, as adults, to ensure this.

The implementation of an annual background check policy will send out a clear message – our children's safety is our paramount concern and we won't sit back while their wellbeing is put on the line. We urge the relevant bodies to ensure the safety of our children by implementing annual background checks on school staff for past convictions.
