Imagine being a 17-year-old early high school graduate, full of dreams, ready to take on the world, but constantly held back by the struggle to get anywhere, This is the reality for myself and I am tired of it. Many people in Arlington, Texas lack affordable transportation restricting our potential and daily life. 

Without a reliable, low-cost means of getting around the city, everyday tasks become logistical nightmares. Simple activities such as getting to work, visiting the gym, spending time at the park, purchasing groceries, or even trips to the library are all overshadowed by daunting transportation costs, depleting our wallets and stifling our independence.

Public transportation options in Arlington are limited and expensive, leaving many residents, especially young people, seniors, and low-income families, without viable alternatives. According to data from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), a single adult in the US can save more than $10,000 a year by using public transportation and living with one less car. Unfortunately, this option is not feasible for many Arlington residents due to inadequate local transit services.

Arlington is the largest city in the United States without a comprehensive public transit system, despite having a population of nearly 400,000 people. The current transportation options do not meet the needs of a growing and diverse community, and the reliance on personal vehicles creates a significant barrier for those who cannot afford these expenses.

It's time for change. We urge city planners and local government officials to prioritize the development of a robust, affordable public transportation system. By introducing measures such as reduced fare programs for students and low-income families, increasing the frequency and routes of buses, and investing in sustainable transit solutions such as biking lanes and pedestrian pathways, Arlington can ensure all residents have equal access to the city’s resources and opportunities.

The transportation system we have now is a failure. There is no guarantee in convenience, cleanliness, and quality, but there is a guarantee in a price that deters people from ever riding a via again.
