Implement a roundabout and 40k zone for safety
The issue
Every morning as I pull into work, my heart sinks a little. I work at a preschool located near a busy intersection that has been the site of multiple car accidents, often involving children, elderly, and young adolescence. As well as the road right beside our preschool often gets cars travelling around 80-90ks and hour. This is not just a statistic; it's a frightening reality for those of us who work and live here.
Our preschool has become an unintended emergency response station, with teachers frequently being the first to rush outside to help after a collision. It's unnerving to think that the next time we respond someone could be seriously injured. The danger is real for the hundreds of families who travel through this intersection each day. Not to mention that this intersection is also close to where our families drop off and pick up their children each day.
The stakes are too high to ignore any longer. We are advocating for the installation of a roundabout and the implementation of a 40k speed zone around the intersection. Research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety demonstrates that roundabouts can reduce accidents by nearly 37% and decrease severe injuries. Additionally, reducing speed limits in high pedestrian areas is well-documented to significantly lower the likelihood of accidents involving fatalities. According to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, suburban roads with lowered speed limits see a 27% reduction in crashes.
We urge local traffic authorities and city planners to consider these valuable adjustments. Installing a roundabout and reducing the speed limit are both practical and effective measures that will dramatically enhance road safety for everyone, especially the children and families who frequent this area daily.
