Implement a Maximum Age Limit of 65 for US Government Elected Officials

The Issue

As a deeply concerned citizen, I am calling for the implementation of a maximum age limit of 65 for all elected officials in our country. The reason for this appeal arises from the growing frustration on the part of the younger generation, who are increasingly concerned about certain policy decisions made by ageing politicians. The implications of these policies will affect the younger generation the most, yet they are being decided upon by individuals detached from the realities the said generation faces.

It's now more important than ever to ensure that those shaping our nation's future can truly relate to the realities and challenges faced by the people they represent. After all, the essence of representative democracy is to guarantee that those in power comprehensively reflect the population they serve. When the average age of our Congress members is 57.6 for House members and 62.9 for senators (as reported by the Congressional Research Service, 2019), one can't help but question if this is truly reflective of the population whose median age is 38.2 (according to U.S. Census Bureau, 2019).

Moreover, it's concerning to see politicians serving themselves rather than their constituents, suggesting a disconnection from the people they're supposed to represent. Establishing an age cap would allow for a much-needed generational perspective in matters relating to climate policy, technology, education, and more.

Regardless of your political affiliations, it is truly terrifying to watch as these politicians refuse to step aside and allow in people who may be more fit to hold office and make decisions. The late Diane Feinstein is a perfect example of this, as is Mitch McConnell. Feinstein was absent to several consecutive committee meetings, resulting in important bills stalling. McConnell has had several episodes of unresponsive freezing during televised interviews. These are people who are supposedly representing us, and who are supposed to be making critical decisions.

This is a vital step towards ensuring an inclusive, forward-thinking political landscape. Sign the petition today to demand an age limit of 65 for all elected officials and help us make politics truly representational.
