Impel the Royal Society to Expel Elon Musk

Impel the Royal Society to Expel Elon Musk
The Issue
Elon Musk, one of the most influential figures in the tech industry and CEO of companies like SpaceX and Tesla, is currently a Fellow of The Royal Society, an honorary status granted to the most eminent scientists, engineers, and technologists. However, we believe that Musk's actions and decisions have often not served the best interests of society as a whole, thereby contradicting the very ethos of The Royal Society.
Musk's private ventures, although commendably progressive and futuristic, often appear to prioritize corporate gains and personal glory over potential societal consequences. For instance, his communication strategies, comprising unpredictable tweets, have led to market instability and triggered investor panic several times. In 2018, a set of his erratic tweets led to heavy financial losses for Tesla shareholders (New York Times, 2018). Moreover, the deployment of large satellite constellations by SpaceX's Starlink is causing significant concerns within the astronomical community, as the satellites are reportedly interfering with celestial observations (Nature, 2020).
The Royal Society, an institution since 1660, prides itself on promoting excellence in science for the greater good of humanity. Having Musk as a Fellow seems paradoxical if his actions persistently create disturbance in societal order and harmony. Therefore, we call upon The Royal Society to reconsider Musk's Fellowship status. Sign this petition to ensure that the highest honors are bestowed upon those who truly act in the interest of society.
