Include Veterinary Medicine for Limited Face to Face Classes #LigtasNaBalikEskwela
The Issue
After a year of remote or online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, various problems are being encountered by both students and faculty alike. Internet connectivity issues, physical and mental health problems, as well as the lack of resources to continue learning has consistently affected the quality of education that the students need for their future careers. Many students have been left behind since the shift from traditional face-to-face classes to remote online learning. This mode of learning is inaccessible to those whose families have felt the negative economic effect of the pandemic, especially those students in families whose breadwinner was laid off from work due to budget cuts.
Establishments such as malls, restaurants, and other tourist destinations have gradually opened, however the majority of the schools in our country have not. Only a handful of campuses were allowed by CHED to conduct limited face-to-face classes, specifically the medicine related courses. But Veterinary Medicine, which is also a medicine course, was not included in the list of priority courses allowed to conduct limited face-to-face classes. Veterinary medicine being a health allied course, numerous skills and techniques are required for the students to learn and master through laboratory classes, duties in the clinic, and hands-on experiences, all of which have not been available to them since classes were held remotely. And to compensate for this lack of knowledge and practical skills, some of the students have decided to work in clinics. Other students however chose to file for a leave of absence due to different circumstances such as financial difficulties and health problems. In response to this, all student councils from colleges with veterinary medicine stands with the Ligtas Na Balik Eskwela campaign.
The Ligtas Na Balik Eskwela campaign aims to address the issues concerning remote learning by lobbying for the students to be able to safely and gradually return to their campuses. With this campaign, we aim for the students to obtain the quality of education that they deserve which will greatly help them in their future careers. In order to reach more people outside our college and university, we would like to ask for your support by signing this petition.
