Dear friends,

SO…WE DID IT!  The briefing happened!

On Monday, around 70 MPs and Peers learned the current state of the climate and ecological emergency from Professor Sir Patrick Vallance and some of the UK's most authoritative voices.

It was one of the best-attended meetings that the All-Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group has ever hosted, and hearing Sir Patrick stress that climate is a bigger challenge than Covid will change how MPs think. In securing this event, over 29,000 of us, including the UK’s leading climate experts and medics, made sure that science is at the heart of our nation’s response to this vast challenge.

You may have seen the widespread coverage that the briefing received, from across the political spectrum.

The Daily Mail told its readers we are plunging into a crisis: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-11013283/Sir-Patrick-Vallance-warns-MPs-plunged-crisis-impacts-climate-change.html

The Guardian called it an ‘emergency briefing with 50 years’ of really big problems to come’: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/13/sir-patrick-vallance-gives-emergency-climate-briefing-to-uk-mps

You can now see, and share, the full briefing and the slides yourselves, at https://www.policyconnect.org.uk/news/sir-patrick-vallance-briefs-parliamentarians-climate-change

As you can imagine, we are keen to build on this amazing success. We want to get MPs who didn’t attend the event to watch it over their summer recess; to encourage those who did to share it with their colleagues.

We hope to secure similar briefings as a regular part of Parliamentary life.  Policy needs facts, and misinformation and greenwash can’t be allowed to wreak havoc on our planet.

To begin these vital next steps, we need your help!

Please thank your MP if they attended, and find out what they found most informative/useful. If they didn’t attend the briefing, please send them the link and ask them to watch.

We’ve set up a 5-minute survey which I’d love you to complete https://bit.ly/ScienceBriefingFeedback

The survey will also offer ideas on what you can write to your MP, to help maximise the impact of the briefing.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your amazing support and work so far.

After such a huge effort, our success strangely means that we’ve only just started!

Please, please, continue to help us by completing the survey https://bit.ly/ScienceBriefingFeedback and contacting your MP and Peers, and let’s see what more we can achieve together.

With best wishes

Angus
