Housing for Disabled Parents and Children
Housing for Disabled Parents and Children
The Issue
THE CITY OF BROCKTON IS LACKING AFFORDABLE AND APPROPRIATE HOUSING FOR DISABLED PARENTS AND CHILDREN.
Currently there are no suitable housing options for disabled parents who have children living with them. Parents who have become disabled due to either an accident or disease or illness are faced with the dilemma of finding a home that will accomodate their handicap as well as have enough room for their children to live with them.
Most Handicap apartment units have only 2 bedrooms, that is fine if a parent has 1 child or 2 of the the same sex children but what happens if there is a boy and a girl? Separating a family unit is very traumatic for the children as well as the parents. It should not ever be a decison a parent has to make because of an unfortunate event that requires an accessible place to live with their kids. Where do they go?
Section 8 helps with the financial aspect but what about the the boy/girl bedroom rule? We need to start building homes for this problem, homes where a disabled parent can function properly and safely while keeping their family intact and close.
