Honour our Veterans with a 'National Veterans Observance Period'
The Issue
(John Diefenbaker, House of Commons Debates, 1 July 1960)
"I am Canadian, a free Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship God in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, free to choose those who govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind."
Greetings - I am an everyday Canadian citizen, who is calling the people into action - to stand up for the respect and recognition of our Veterans, both of past and present.
A new war is being waged - a spiritual war. A war the likes of which we have never seen before in history, except for in Biblical times.
Our Veterans fought with their very lives on the line and many paid the ultimate price in order to help secure the freedoms and way of life we so readily enjoy on a daily basis. They fought for both God and Country, and we are certainly in dire need of God's help during these turbulent times.
Not only is God being systematically removed and replaced in schools and society, but the feats and historical accomplishments of our Veterans are being ignorantly removed from our Canadian Passport.
The Royal Canadian Legion released a statement recently:
“We are disappointed by the decision to remove an image that signifies the sacrifices made for the very sort of freedom the passport provides,” said the Legion. “The Vimy Memorial was a fundamental image, also representing a defining moment for Canada, a country emerging as an independent nation with limitless potential.”
“Removing that image in the context of a design change and without knowing the rationale was, to put it bluntly, a poor decision.”
The excuse given by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, at a press conference was:
“One of the things that I heard from consultations was that we want to celebrate our diversity and inclusion, we want to celebrate our natural environment … and [we] tried to bake those elements into the design...”

After this deplorable revocation and stripping of Canadian history, and the outright slap in the face to our Veterans, I am calling for, firstly:
- for the Government of Canada to return our Passport to it's former original presentation, in recognition of all historical figures,
and secondly:
- for the Government of Canada to implement, effective immediately, a 'Veteran's Observance Period' - starting from November to January - in honour of all Veterans, past and present.
If we are to take the Minister's speaking of "celebrating diversity and inclusion" to heart, then, in all fairness, our Veterans should be paid the same homage as the LGBTQ community, since the Government of Canada has prestigiously awarded this short-lived minority group a "Pride Season" - which runs from June through to September.
To quote the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien:
"It’s also a time to remember the trailblazing activists that risked everything to fight for equality. We owe so much to the change-makers who came before us, and the people that fearlessly share their stories."
Our Veterans have one WEEK devoted to the immense risks they took, fighting fearlessly as they traversed battlefields, toiling and suffering unfathomable trauma during our country's history. We owe so much to these change makers who came before us, who fearlessly share their heartwrenching stories of war with us.
This, at the very least, is what we can do in honour of our Veterans - to give proper observance, respect, and recognition of everything they sacrificed for our Nation. For the government to deny this request would be the ultimate insult, in saying a New Age movement (whose "struggles" pale in comparison) deserves more accolades than our beloved Soldiers who gave their lives for us.
They should not be treated as cast-asides, societal ne'er-do-well's, reduced to mere "poppy peddlers", not even allowed the dignity to display their collection stands in stores. Soon our Government will have them cordoned to a street corner, alongside the street buskers or local panhandlers.
If Minister Sean Fraser truly respects the notion of 'inclusiveness' which, by definition means including everyone, then there should be no reservation or objection in the implementation of a 'Veteran's Observance Period', so that our Veterans are honoured equally.
My goal, is to submit this petition to the Government - in particular Minister Sean Fraser - to request the restoration of our Passport to its original presentation and requisition the Government to enact the 'Veteran's Observance Period '.
Let us stand by our Veterans, and help make Canada great once more!
"From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!"
