Honor LGBTQ Advocate Lori Cannon With a Memorial in Chicago

Honor LGBTQ Advocate Lori Cannon With a Memorial in Chicago
The Issue
Lori Cannon wasn’t just an advocate — she was a lifeline. From co-founding Open Hand Chicago during the height of the AIDS crisis to organizing with ACT UP Chicago, she fought tirelessly for those the system ignored. She fed people when no one else would, spoke truth when it wasn’t safe to, and never stopped standing up for the dignity of LGBTQ+ Chicagoans living with HIV and AIDS.
Her death at age 74 leaves a hole in the heart of Chicago’s queer community — but her legacy should not fade with the news cycle. She deserves to be remembered in a way that reflects the depth of her impact.
We are calling on city leaders — including Mayor Brandon Johnson, Alderman Bennett Lawson (44th Ward), and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events — to rename a public space, community center, or section of Boystown in Lori Cannon’s honor. Whether it’s a street, a garden, or a dedicated memorial, it should stand as a lasting symbol of her courage and compassion.
Chicago has never been what it is today without the work of activists like Lori — people who fought through grief, rage, and indifference to make the city more humane. She didn’t do it for attention. She did it because people were dying, and someone had to show up. Now it’s time for the city she helped shape to show up for her.
Add your name to support a permanent public tribute to Lori Cannon — a woman who gave everything for her community and changed the face of Chicago in the process.
