Cut Costs for Post-Secondary Students in BC Due to COVID-19
Cut Costs for Post-Secondary Students in BC Due to COVID-19
The Issue
Due to the pandemic, many post-secondary schools have made the decision to keep all courses online in hopes of reducing contact and slowing the spread of COVID-19. However, the cost of tuition has not been reduced.
Many students have been taught in person since childhood, and therefore learn more efficiently when they are in a classroom or lecture hall setting. As we transition to online schooling, students are likely going to struggle to understand and succeed in courses that are not intended to be taught online. There have been many reports of students failing to retain information that is learned during online courses, which can lead to issues in the future when taking courses that call for prerequisites. The quality of learning is far superior while taking in-person classes.
Professors who are used to delivering their lectures in-person may also face obstacles as they try to adapt to an online setting, which directly impacts the quality of learning. While it is no fault of the professors', students who have no choice but to voice questions and concerns via email will often not hear back for extended periods of time, due to the overwhelming amount of emails any given professor may receive. It is also a struggle to keep course material engaging during an online lecture.
Some students are still being charged fees regarding in-person activities and resources that will not be used. During this time, tuition should reflect the money that is needed to provide resources that are available at home, as staying home is encouraged.
While we have merely touched on some subjects that support reduced tuition fees, there are many more variables that have been mentioned and will be further discussed as we move forward with this petition. Thank you for your support.
