Presidential Rule In Andhra Pradesh

The Issue

Once known as one of India’s best states, Andhra Pradesh is now in tatters. The Assembly Elections in 2019 resulted in the victory of Jagan Reddy’s YSRCP in 2019. Since then, Andhra Pradesh has been set on a dangerous path leading to a total collapse of law & order.

State Sponsored Terrorism: The incumbent YSRCP has been resorting to State Sponsored Terrorism, terrorising the state using state machinery to intimidate and attack the opposition parties, especially the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Several TDP leaders have been attacked and even killed - a dangerous violation of the right to free speech and peaceful protest. Even doctors were attacked for complaining about the lack of medical facilities.

Attacks on places of worship: Even Gods are not safe in Andhra Pradesh. Over the past two years, several Hindu temples have been attacked in the state, Taliban style. Most prominently, a 400-year-old murthi at the Ramatheertham temple was beheaded and the sacred chariot at Antarvedi was burnt down in September 2019. The police appeared more determined to save the image of the ruling party than come up with an effective action plan to stop such attacks.

Drugs Capital of India: Andhra Pradesh has been making headlines ever since it has emerged as the epicentre of ganja smuggling in the country and beyond. Activists of various tribal unions in the state have accused the leaders of the ruling YSRCP of smuggling ganja, and the law-enforcing authorities of turning a blind eye.

Crime, Debt & administrative free-fall: According to NCRB, Andhra Pradesh has seen a whopping 63% rise in crimes since 2019. The state reels under a debt of almost a staggering 400,000 Crore amidst an administrative free fall.

Spurious Liquor & Parallel Mafia Structure: YS Jagan became Chief Minister riding on his promise of Liquor Prohibition. Forget liquor ban, Andhra Pradesh is now a hotspot for spurious liquor (sold at a very high price) that is destroying the health of millions. Many media reports have suggested that the companies / distilleries supplying liquor are either directly or indirectly owned by the Chief Minister and his close family / friends. The money gained out of this operation is pumped into funding a Parallel Mafia Structure on the lines of the dreaded Italian Mafia or Columbian Drug Cartels. The members of the mafia have attacked the Judiciary, media and other guardians of democracy. Such acts are a grave threat to the fabric of democracy in the country and puts the nation’s integrity and policy of adherence to the principles of Constitution in danger.

We urge the Hon’ble President of India to initiate an inquiry into the state’s law & order situation by CBI/Central agencies and take a strict action against the DGP in view of his failure to execute his constitutional duties. We also urge him to order an investigation into the criminal network behind the free flow of drugs in AP.

The situation in Andhra Pradesh is conducive for the invocation of Article 356. We urge the President of India to declare President’s Rule in Andhra Pradesh.
