The Issue

I loved my job as a correctional officer in Montgomery County, Maryland, a position I worked hard to attain over nearly four long months. Just before I started this role, my family was hit by a series of tragic events: I lost my baby brother to gun violence, my favorite aunt passed away, and my grandmother, who raised me, suffered a major stroke. Despite these personal challenges, I was committed to serving my community—a commitment cut short by discrimination and retaliation.

As a Black openly gay officer, I found myself targeted by homophobic and racist behavior within the correctional facility. It all began when I reported racist comments made by Hispanic coworkers. Instead of addressing these issues, the County covered them up, denying any knowledge of my sexual orientation and falsely accusing me of lying about my personal tragedies.

The retaliation was swift. I was treated differently from other officers and ultimately fired under false pretenses. Human Resources and high-ranking correctional officials blatantly lied, even in affidavits, contributing to a deep-seated culture of intolerance and discrimination.

This is not just an injustice against me, but a violation against every LGBTQ+ and minority individual striving to serve their community without fear of discrimination. The County’s behavior highlights systemic failures that must be addressed.

Now, I call on the Montgomery County government to investigate this blatant discrimination and retaliation. I demand transparency and accountability from Human Resources and correctional officials who have perpetuated this hostile environment. It's vital to ensure equal treatment and a discrimination-free workplace for all employees.

Join me in standing against this injustice. Sign this petition urging Montgomery County to open a thorough investigation into these acts of discrimination and to implement measures ensuring all correctional officers can work safely and free from fear of prejudice. Together, we can make a difference and foster an inclusive, respectful workplace for everyone.
