Juanita Moore was a Pioneer in Black Cinema Help Get Her a Hollywood Star

The Issue

The Golden Globes has brought recent attention to the push for more diverse representation in media, and Hollywood in general. Many black actors gained fame during Hollywood’s Golden Age paving the way for others, in an industry that provided few opportunities that in many cases didn’t give them credit. In a career that lasted over 70 years, Juanita Moore made more than 80 film and television appearances before her death in 2014.

Though she was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the 1959 film, "Imitation of Life," she didn't reach the level of fame and recognition that might normally follow such a nomination. She was 18 when she worked as a chorus girl in New York’s  Zanzibar club during the Harlem Renaissance. She then went to Europe where she performed at London’s Palladium and the Moulin Rouge in Paris. When she returned to the United States, Hollywood had limited roles open to blacks, as Ms Moore said of role choices, “from the boudoir to the jungle.” However, Ms. Moore held a standard of class in her selection of roles that leaves a legacy of work befitting a true star. We hope to garner sufficient signatures to afford her talented work the recognition it deserves.
