Hold the Academy Accountable for Honoring a Pro-Kremlin Actor - Stand With Ukraine
The Issue
We, the undersigned, express our deep disappointment and outrage at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for recognizing Russian actor Yuriy Borisov with a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 2025 Academy Awards for his role in "Anora" (2024). By honoring Borisov, the Academy has legitimized an actor who has publicly supported Russia’s unlawful war against Ukraine and actively participated in Kremlin-backed propaganda efforts.
Borisov has openly aligned himself with the Russian regime, which continues to commit atrocities against Ukrainians. He has taken part in Kremlin-sponsored initiatives, including starring in the propaganda film AK-47, which was filmed in occupied Crimea—Ukrainian territory illegally seized by Russia. His involvement in pro-Kremlin projects and his public support for Putin’s aggressive policies should have disqualified him from receiving such prestigious recognition.
By nominating and celebrating Borisov, the Academy has sent a dangerous message: that actors who support authoritarian regimes and take part in propaganda can still be honored on the world’s biggest stage. This undermines the fundamental values of democracy, human rights, and respect for national sovereignty.
Anora, the film for which Borisov was nominated, was written, directed, produced, and edited by Sean Baker. The film won five Oscars, further amplifying concerns over the Academy’s recognition of Russian actors who align with Putin’s regime. While Anora itself is not overtly political, its casting choices and the Academy’s decision to honor Borisov contribute to the normalization of Russian cultural influence at a time when the country is waging an unprovoked and brutal war against Ukraine.
At a time when the global community must stand united against Russia’s aggression, the entertainment industry must not provide a platform for individuals who promote the narratives of oppressive regimes. Artistic freedom does not mean honoring those who contribute to the normalization of war crimes and violations of international law.
California, home to a large Ukrainian-American community, has consistently demonstrated leadership in supporting Ukraine. Governor Gavin Newsom and the California State Assembly have taken a strong stand against Russian aggression, and we urge the Academy to align with those values in its future decisions.
To prevent this in the future, we call on the Academy to:
✅ Publicly acknowledge the concerns regarding its decision to nominate and recognize Yuriy Borisov.
✅ Commit to stricter ethical considerations when recognizing individuals with ties to authoritarian regimes.
✅ Ensure future nominations align with values that promote peace, justice, and human rights.
By signing this petition, we stand against the normalization of war, oppression, and propaganda in the entertainment industry. Together, we demand accountability from the Academy and a stronger commitment to global justice.
