The Issue

I've been getting harassed since an online predator messaged me, threatening to hurt my family, all because of a meme that someone else posted. They got so offended over a meme that a fake account posted. As the only real person they could associate with the fake account, and even after making a police report with my real name, they continue to create fake accounts to be abusive.

This isn't just my story. Every day, countless others face similar threats and harassment online. According to recent studies, over 40% of internet users have experienced online harassment, and the numbers are even higher amongst teens and young adults. The anonymity afforded by the internet is being exploited by predators and cyberbullies to intimidate and manipulate people without consequence.

We need to enforce stricter regulations for online behaviour to safeguard our communities. Increasing the minimum social media age to 18 and implementing ID verification for users can help create a safer online environment. These measures would deter anonymous predators and hold individuals accountable for their actions.

Countries like Germany and the United Kingdom have introduced laws that require platform providers to remove illegal content within 24 hours. It is time for our legal system to embrace similar regulations, ensuring that the internet is a safe space for everyone, free from fear and harassment.

Let us rally together for a change. Enforcing accountability online is not just a preventative measure but an essential step towards a safer digital future. Support this petition to urge lawmakers to take immediate action. Let us stand together to hold people accountable for their online behaviour. Please sign and make your voice heard.
