Hold Oklahoma County Accountable — No New Jail Funding Without Voter Approval

The Issue

In 2022, Oklahoma County voters approved a $260 million bond to build a new county jail. Now, just a few years later, officials say the cost has ballooned to $835 million — more than three times what voters agreed to.

County commissioners say inflation and construction costs are to blame. But this isn’t just a small budget overrun. This is a staggering cost increase with major financial consequences for local taxpayers. Some officials are now considering a sales tax increase or other funding methods to close the gap, potentially without giving voters a direct say.

Voters deserve better. We supported this bond because we were promised a safer, more humane facility — not a blank check with no limits, no updated plan, and no accountability.

We are calling on the Oklahoma County Commissioners, the Jail Trust, and all relevant agencies to:

  • Immediately pause all major construction spending beyond the original bond scope
  • Hold public forums to explain the cost increases, line by line, and provide full transparency
  • Put any additional funding measures — including sales taxes — to a public vote
  • Explore downsizing or phasing options that align with what voters approved in 2022
  • Reassess the jail’s design to ensure it prioritizes rehabilitation and mental health care, not just capacity

This isn’t just about a building. It’s about public trust, fiscal responsibility, and making sure that any solution truly serves our community.

Sign this petition to demand transparency, voter input, and fiscal accountability before Oklahoma County moves forward with $835 million in jail construction costs.
