The issue

Australians are being financially destroyed by a sophisticated investment scam built entirely on Meta's platforms — and Meta has done nothing to stop it.

Scammers stole the real professional identity of Tom Petrovski, a genuine analyst at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and used it to run targeted investment advertisements on Facebook. They contacted victims through fake WhatsApp numbers, sent daily professional-looking "market briefings," and recommended stocks that did initially rise — building genuine trust over weeks. Once victims believed in the opportunity, they were pressured to liquidate their Self-Managed Superannuation Funds, take out personal loans, and borrow from family and friends.

Then the scammers collapsed their positions and vanished with the money.

Victims include Australians who lost savings set aside for surgery and critical medical care. These are not reckless people. They were systematically deceived through Meta's own advertising infrastructure and WhatsApp — platforms that have no meaningful identity verification for financial actors.

Meta published the fraudulent ads. Meta provided the communication channel. Meta profited from every impression. And the real person whose identity was stolen had no way to stop it.

This has to end.

WE DEMAND META:

1. Implement mandatory identity verification for all financial advertisers on Facebook and Instagram — BEFORE ads are published, not after complaints are received.

2. Introduce verification for WhatsApp accounts claiming to represent financial professionals or institutions, with rapid takedown of fraudulent accounts.

3. Create a professional identity protection system so named individuals can flag and block unauthorised use of their credentials in Meta advertising.

4. Establish a victim compensation framework where Meta's negligence enabled provable financial loss through its platforms.

5. Cooperate fully with ASIC, the AFP, and Australia's Scams Prevention Framework — including timely disclosure of advertiser identity data to investigators.

Meta's platforms were not where this crime happened to take place. They were the infrastructure it was built on.
