Hold Jimmy Kimmel Accountable for Statements Encouraging Violence Against Black Women
The Issue
On a recent episode of his television program, Jimmy Kimmel made comments referencing political disagreements involving Nicki Minaj and stated words to the effect of “where is Cardi B with a shoe.” Many viewers interpreted this statement as encouraging or joking about physical assault against a Black woman for expressing her political views.
This comment was especially disturbing given the long history of Black women being publicly mocked, dehumanized, and subjected to violence for speaking their minds. When a powerful media figure makes light of assault, even in jest, it normalizes harm and reinforces dangerous stereotypes. Humor does not excuse language that promotes or trivializes violence.
Black women already face disproportionate rates of harassment and violence in the United States. Public figures have a responsibility to understand the impact of their words, especially when speaking to millions of viewers on a national platform.
We are calling on ABC, the producers of Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the show’s advertisers to take this matter seriously and respond appropriately.
We demand the following actions:
• A formal review of the statements made on the show
• A PUBLIC APOLOGY and clarification acknowledging the harm caused
• Clear standards to prevent language that encourages or trivializes violence
• Accountability measures for on-air talent who cross these lines
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from accountability. Media platforms shape public culture, and violent rhetoric, even when framed as comedy, has real-world consequences.
Black women deserve safety, respect, and the freedom to express political opinions without being threatened or mocked with violence.
