Hold Facebook Accountable for Hosting Animal Cruelty

Hold Facebook Accountable for Hosting Animal Cruelty
The Issue
Facebook is failing animals — and it's time to hold them accountable.
A new global investigation by the Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (SMACC) has revealed that 87.5% of reported online animal abuse content was found on Facebook in 2024.
That includes horrifying footage of:
- Monkeys being tortured and mocked
- Endangered species like orangutans and chimpanzees being abused
- Dogs and cats suffering in violent or staged videos for views
Meta platforms (Facebook and Instagram) made up more than 70,000 abuse reports submitted by the public — and less than 40% of the flagged content was removed.
This is not a glitch in the system. It's a pattern of negligence.
We demand that Meta (Facebook and Instagram) immediately:
- Enforce a zero-tolerance policy for all animal cruelty content, including violence, staged abuse, “entertainment” videos, and exotic pet exploitation
- Publicly report takedown data for animal abuse content quarterly
- Work with independent animal protection experts to audit and improve their content moderation systems
- Ban repeat offenders and dismantle abuse networks that use Meta platforms to spread cruelty
- Comply with all global laws, including the UK’s Online Safety Act and the EU’s Digital Services Act, that require swift removal of illegal animal abuse content.
Animal abuse is not content. It’s not entertainment. It’s not an algorithmic growth tool.
And under new international laws, it’s not just wrong — it’s illegal.
Social media platforms cannot claim to connect the world while turning a blind eye to suffering. Facebook has a responsibility to protect the vulnerable, not profit from their pain.
Sign to demand real action. No more cruelty in your feed. No more excuses.
