Hold Asantehene Accountable: Stop Land Grabs and Human Rights Abuses in Ghana

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on the United Nations, the Ghanaian government, and international human rights organizations to urgently address the escalating land grabs and human rights violations allegedly perpetrated by the Asantehene and the Kumasi Traditional Council in Ghana's Ashanti Region.

The Issue:

Despite Ghana's Land Act 2020 (Act 1036), designed to protect land rights, the Asantehene has undermined these laws, seizing lands from indigenous communities like Benimasi-Boadi. This has led to:

Forced Displacement: Families torn from their ancestral homes and livelihoods.
Violence and Torture: Indigenous leaders and land rights defenders, like Nana Osei Bonsu, abducted, beaten, and threatened.
Abuse of Power: Asantehene using his influence to manipulate the legal system and silence dissent.
Cultural Erosion: Threatening the unique heritage and traditions tied to the land.

Women and children bear the brunt of these abuses, facing disproportionate harm and vulnerability.

The Solution:

We demand:

Accountability: A full investigation into the Asantehene's actions and prosecution for any human rights violations.
Protection: Immediate measures to safeguard indigenous communities and land rights defenders in the Ashanti Region.
Enforcement of Land Act 1036: Upholding the law and ensuring fair compensation for those whose lands have been unjustly seized.
International Pressure: The UN and global community must hold Ghana accountable for protecting indigenous rights.

Our Story:

Nana Osei Bonsu, a community leader from Benimasi-Boadi, was brutally attacked and forced to flee Ghana due to his efforts to protect his people's land. His story is just one of many.

We Stand United:

We are a growing movement of individuals, communities, and organizations demanding justice. Land Rights Defenders Inc. is leading the charge, empowering communities with legal support and advocacy.

Join us in fighting for the rights of indigenous people in Ghana. Sign this petition and help us hold the Asantehene accountable!
