Reconsider methods of evaluation for final semester students

Reconsider methods of evaluation for final semester students

The Issue

To respected authorities,

I am writing this to urge you to, as the title suggests, reconsider the methods of evaluation that have been outlined on Amizone. The suggested method of MCQs for a duration of 2 hours online (for a few courses) and the method of several other core courses which hasn't been declared yet, in spite of the circulation of the opt-in form on Amizone doesn't take into consideration issues such as -

  1. Poor/non-connectivity in internet access - Not taking into account far-flung regions of India, even prominent areas are facing connectivity issues.
  2. Absence of functional computer systems or hardware issues.
  3. Inaccessibility of study material since students left for their homes without foreseeing a possible lockdown.

The university doesn’t allow the formation of student bodies and grievance redressal has largely been on the basis of a mentor-mentee system which is ineffective to say the least, since the concerns of the students have largely gone unheeded. This amounts to poor planning, since this situation took everyone by surprise and has suspended normal operations in the college for over two months now.

The form published on Amizone states that examinations be held in the month of June and students who for reasons can't take the exams at the stipulated time shall appear for the exams in the indefinite future and that the university wouldn't be responsible for late declaration of results.

An opt-in system for exams is tantamount to stating some students can have a head-start over others as a result of simply having the required resources at their disposal. The process should be uniform for all.

Methods like -

  • evaluation on the basis of previous semesters' performance,
  • on the basis of internal assessment of the current semester,
  • or a combination of both,

as is being followed in several universities both in India and abroad, is far more viable. I request the authorities to consider another, fairer method of evaluation, if not the aforementioned suggestions.
