Help us stop Western Power’s 132kV Transmission Line on Sydney and Joyce Roads, Gnangara

The issue

Hi, our names are Katie Green and Renee Harman and we live on the corners of Pine Crest Way and Joyce Road, Gnangara

We are reaching out to highlight an issue that our community is currently facing that needs our immediate attention.

This month, we have been contacted by Western Power who advised us of the plans for new overhead 132kV transmission lines to be built along Sydney Road to Joyce Road to the Neerabup Terminal (see map below), right through the heart of our community.

We believe we need to act quick to stop this plan which they are saying they will be commencing in 2026 due to the long-term impacts on our properties, our environment, and our community lifestyle.

We, along with many residents are concerned about:

  • How close these lines will be to our homes
  • The health implications (omissions linked to causing cancer!)
  • The decreases in property values
  • Loss of useable land due to the approximately 10M buffer zone around the transmission lines
  • The noise pollution during wet weather of these lines crackling and sizzling
  • The lack of transparent community consultation so far
  • The fact that they are starting construction in early 2026!!

Alternative route is continuing the power lines along Ocean Reef Road to Alexander Drive around the back of Lake Gnangara which would have not impact to our community and residential homes. Or investing to sink the powerlines.

The project will have detrimental impacts on the Gnangara community as this high-voltage infrastructure will be literally at the front of our properties.

The installation of high-voltage power lines poses potential health risks to those living nearby. Various studies have suggested a link between long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from power lines and health issues such as cancers, particularly in children. Residents along Sydney Road and Joyce Road should not have to suffer these potential health risks, nor should they live under the looming threat of massive steel towers overshadowing their homes. We need to stop this now.

There is also the concern of property devaluation. Homeowners who have invested in properties in these areas will likely face a decrease in property values due to the unsightly appearance of transmission lines and potential health concerns, making it harder to sell their properties if they choose to move.

Western Power say they have been consulting with Gnangara residents since July 2025 but that was for their original plans which impacted property owners on Paini Way in Jandebup.

They have just changed their plans in October to a new route which impacts many community members (see map in link below) yet they are currently at the stage of "geotechnical and site surveys" despite only just contacting residents along Joyce Road last week!!

We as residents need to demand Western Power to immediately halt the current plan for the 132kV transmission line through the middle of Gnangara and find a better alternative.
