Dear friends,

          My name is Florence, and I have a passion for helping animals. In particular, small freshwater fish. I know that most people may believe that fish don't have feelings, but regardless, their health still matters. In this case, I am talking about Japanese Fighting Fish, also known as Betta fish. These fish make extraordinary pets, but, because the males will fight with each other, they have to be kept in separate tanks. Most pet stores will keep them in a tiny handheld cup. This leads to the misconception that Betta fish can live their whole lives in these cups. This is not the case. In fact, Betta fish need at least five gallons of tank space to live out their lives well. If a Betta is kept in a tank smaller than this, it often leads to loss of brain function, emotions, and feelings.

          If pet stores continue to have Betta in these housing areas, many many more Betta will either die from lack of space, or lose emotion, feelings, and parts of the brain. Me being me, I don't want this to happen. Instead, I believe that if we all band together, we can send this petition to pet stores all over the world and stop this inhumane treatment of Bettas. If you believe what I do, please sign this petition. We can make the change, we just have to want to make the change.

          The change I propose is the elimination of Betta cups. Instead, I suggest that pet stores have a small wall with rectangular one-gallon tanks lined up next to each other. A one-gallon tank is still small, but it would be a better temporary housing solution for those tiny cups. After all, if would be better than those cups well a Betta would wait to find their home. Alongside this, I will recommend to pet stores that they have a sign near the Betta fish explaining the correct tank size and care.
