HELP SAVE JAZZLAND - The Heart of Coolangatta

The issue

Act now while there’s still time to oppose Coolangatta’s Jazzland proposed development!

Jazzland, the historic building on McLean Street in the heart of Coolangatta, is to be turned into a 23 story highrise if developers get their way.

Submissions to express your opposition to this development remain open until May 4th

Built in 1928, Jazzland was a popular dance hall during the interwar period and has played an integral role in Coolangatta’s social history. It is one of the last remaining historic buildings on the Gold Coast which has kept its original structure and design, even after repairs and maintenance over the years.

For the last two decades the Jazzland building was known as the 20th Century Antiques and Collectibles Store and was hugely popular with locals and tourists alike for its historic atmosphere and the quirky paraphernalia sold, especially during the Cooly Rocks On annual festival.

The developers say they will keep the original facade and floorboards of Jazzland, but the highrise they plan to replace this iconic building with will be completely incompatible with the character of the neighbouring 1 or 2 story original buildings on McLean and Griffith Street, which does not fit into the rest of the developed area.

By destroying the original design of Jazzland and creating a 175 unit highrise building, traffic congestion will increase in Griffith and Mclean’s narrow streets and place an immense amount of pressure on local parking which is already a struggle and infrastructure services.  Not only that, it will be blocking out direct sun light for the community and will end up over shadowing the main street of a late afternoon.

Please sign the petition now to help save Jazzland while there is still time and to restore it to its original design to keep the history Alive!
