Help Kimberley Park State School Advocate for a New Outside School Hours Care Building

The issue

In 2023, the Department of Education initiated the 'Renewal Project', which, among other things, led to the removal of the Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) building at Kimberley Park State School.

This loss hit us deeply. We were forced to move our OSHC into our Inclusion Centre that provides a safe space for our neurodivergent students across the busy school day. In good faith, we trialed this arrangement and it has not worked.

We were told by the Department that we should sacrifice the quality of our specialist programs by moving the OSHC into the music, LOTE, dance, design and visual arts spaces. These buildings are located in the middle of our school campus and will be a nightmare to access in the early morning and night given the hilly landscape of our school. It is not a practical or safe solution for an OSHC. The Department should know better.

Our OSHC enrolment numbers have recently surged from 90 to close to 200 children. We have a new provider, Camp Australia, who, like us, is committed to providing the best for our students. However, our current facilities are limiting us.

KPSS needs a new OSHC building. A replacement for the building that was taken from us. A place for our growing number of OSHC students to be cared for, to learn, and to feel safe after school hours, as well as during holidays. Our neurodivergent students deserve to have their space back too.

We call on the government to provide funding for the construction of a new OSHC building at Kimberley Park State School, in Shailer Park QLD, Australia. We have the perfect location near the school's back gate. It will run alongside the Inclusion Centre maximising the existing ramp infrastructure to ensure we provide access for all abilities. We now need the funding to make things right.

Sincerely,

The Kimberley Park State School P&C Association
