Less pollution in Hawaii waters, and the ocean

The Issue

Tourists drawn in, produce over $14 billion annually to the state of Hawaii. However, with much tourism coming to the islands it is also producing a lot of trash. Pollution is now contaminating all of Hawaii, and destroying the native Hawaiian’s way of life. Chemical waste, runoff from agricultural waste, household waste products, sewage spills and dumping, industrial waste, and windblown pollution. These are the pollutants that are damaging Hawaii, as well as the rest of the Pacific. According to the statewide reports, the average amount of trash built up on Hawaii beaches each year is 15 to 20 tons. Plastics are one of the highest concerns pertaining to our ocean. The average American will throw out approximately 185 pounds of plastic material each year. This trash is bad in the Pacific because they combine in a cluster, and 60% to 80% of all oceanic garbage is consisted of plastic, which takes the longest to breakdown compared to any other sediment waste.  impacting the sea life as well. Trash is being ingested by animals all around Hawaii, along with the rest of the Pacific. Most of this consumption is involuntary, with some animals mistaking the trash as a food source. Sea turtles are confusing plastic bags for jellyfish and the bag gets stuck in their throat and suffocate, since the 'Honu" or green sea turtles an endangered species, this waste is not good for them, they are getting tumors  on body organs from the waste. Not just the green sea turtles are being affected, birds, whales, and fish are being affected by the plastic. Plastic is the most common element that is found in the ocean, it is harmful and does not breakdown easily, also is considered food by sea life. The biggest source of pollution in the sea is from land base sources, oil, dirt, septic tanks, farms, ranches, motor vehicles, among larger sources. Thousands of tons of trash and waste is dumped into the ocean daily. Over a million of sea birds are killed by ocean pollution each year, and three hundred dolphins and porpoises are killed each year due to being entangled in discarded fishing nets, among the other items, one hundred thousand sea mammals are killed by the waste dumped into the ocean each year. Although the trash is dumped miles away from land it still washes up on beaches and coastal areas and effecting everything in between, affecting the sea animals which are being affected by man made chemicals released into the ocean. Oil is the fastest source of ocean deterioration to the ocean it is far more harmful then the trash and waste dumped into the ocean, 12% of the oil in the ocean is from actual oil spills but the majority of the oil is coming from the drainage from the land, an actual oil spill can choke an entire ecosystem an change everything . Toxic metals can destroy many things in the marine life such as their biochemistry, behavior reproduction, and growth of the marine life.
