The Issue

For many years, I have had to work on the days of my holiday while my neighbors of other faiths and backgrounds enjoyed paid days off to observe their religious celebrations. As a Muslim residing in New York State, this experience has been emotionally taxing, highlighting an inconsistency in how diverse religious celebrations are acknowledged in our state’s employment policies.

Eid Al Adha and Eid Ul Fitr are two of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar, equivalent in importance to Christmas for Christians or Yom Kippur for Jews. Yet, they are not officially recognized as paid holidays in New York State, forcing many Muslim employees to choose between their religious practices and professional responsibilities.

This disparity not only affects the morale and well-being of Muslim employees but also undermines the core values of inclusivity and equality that New York proudly champions. According to a Pew Research Center study, approximately 9% of New York City’s population identifies as Muslim, and they deserve the same respect and acknowledgment provided to other religious groups.

Recognizing Eid Al Adha and Eid Ul Fitr as state holidays would reflect the vibrant and diverse tapestry of cultures and beliefs that define New York State. It would demonstrate a commitment to equal representation and ensure that all citizens, regardless of their faith, are valued and respected.

We urge the New York State Legislature to amend current employment laws to include these crucial days as paid state holidays. This change will not only promote inclusivity but also allow Muslim New Yorkers to celebrate their traditions with dignity and without economic penalty.

Join us in advocating for this necessary update to our state’s holiday schedule. Sign this petition to make Eid Al Adha and Eid Ul Fitr recognized paid holidays, promoting equality and inclusivity in the workplace and across our communities. Together, we can ensure every citizen's faith and traditions are honored and celebrated equally.
