Have a disability swing added to Mill o Forest play park

The Issue

Dear Aberdeenshire Council Members,

As a member of the community, I am writing to request that a disability swing be added to our local park. This is an important issue that affects many individuals with disabilities in our community who are currently unable to enjoy the playground like other children.

Mill o Forest park is in close proximity to Carronhill school and would broaden their scope for trips outwith the school. Having Carronhill has been a lifeline for many local families, mine included, this means that there are likely many families in our community who would benefit from having a disability swing at our local park.

Furthermore, providing accessible play equipment is not only important for social inclusion but also has numerous health benefits. According to research published by the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD), physical activity can help improve cardiovascular health, reduce obesity rates, and improve mental health outcomes for individuals with disabilities.

All public facilities such as parks should be accessible for people with disabilities, and their parents/carers. My son is too heavy for myself to lift into a "infant swing" and he soon will no longer fit, but as he can't hold onto the chains of a typical swing, I cannot take him to the park alone, and due to his sensory needs the swing is an extremely therapeutic and safe way to help him relax and have fun.

I urge you to consider this request and take action towards making our local park more inclusive for all members of our community. Thank you for your attention on this matter.

Sincerely,

Shona Fisher
