Hands Off Greenland — Trump Must Respect Denmark’s Sovereignty
The Issue
President Trump has once again threatened to take over Greenland — a semiautonomous territory of Denmark — just days after launching an unauthorized military raid in Venezuela.
This time, he's claiming national security justifies his desire to "control" Greenland, despite fierce opposition from both Danish and Greenlandic leaders.
Let’s be absolutely clear: Greenland is not for sale. It is not America’s to take. And the people who live there have made it clear — again and again — that they reject Trump's ambitions.
Following Trump’s remarks to The Atlantic, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a strong statement condemning the threats. “The United States has no right to annex Greenland,” she said. “Stop the threats.” Greenland’s own Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called the rhetoric “utterly unacceptable” and said linking Venezuela and Greenland was “disrespectful.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has floated annexing Greenland, but after the aggressive use of U.S. military power in Venezuela, the threat feels more real. American officials have already posted images of Greenland covered in an American flag, appointed a “special envoy” to the island, and have reportedly spied on Greenland’s leaders.
This is not diplomacy. It’s coercion.
The United States has long prided itself on being a defender of freedom and sovereignty. But this kind of behavior — threats, power plays, and attempted land grabs — puts us closer to the empires we once opposed.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a NATO ally with whom we have a mutual defense agreement. Trying to intimidate an ally is not just undemocratic — it’s reckless.
We call on President Trump to immediately withdraw all claims and suggestions that the U.S. intends to acquire or control Greenland.
We also urge Congress to condemn any future attempts to undermine Danish sovereignty or use military leverage against peaceful allies.
The people of Greenland and Denmark have spoken. Trump must listen.
