Many of us spent our youth in HCDSB schools, and recently a motion has been put forward to put up Pride Flags outside of schools and safe space posters in classrooms! While this is an awesome step to make Catholic schools a safe and inclusive environment, which historically they are not, several trustees are against this motion. Let me be clear. Refusal to put into action such small gestures that could make LGBTQ+ youth feel safe at school is homophobic, disgusting, and fosters a climate where hate can and is encouraged to grow. My time in the HCDSB included so many amazing teachers and students that were not representative of these archaic notions against LGBTQ+ individuals.
