Halt the Demolition of Fremantle's 130-Year-Old Tree

Halt the Demolition of Fremantle's 130-Year-Old Tree
The issue
I am a resident of Fremantle, WA, Australia and it deeply saddens me to witness the potential destruction of our 130+ year-old tree. (https://heraldonlinejournal.com/2024/02/16/mighty-fig-tree-drops-off-the-list/
This mammoth of a tree, planted in the 1880s, has stood the test of time, enduring far longer than any of us. It's a living testament to our history, a silent witness to the passage of generations. It would be an irreplaceable loss and a profound shame to see it destroyed, providing not only shade and beauty but also serving as an important habitat for local wildlife. It is disheartening to see that financial gain is being prioritized over environmental concern.
Trees like this one are crucial in combating climate change. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, trees absorb about 12% of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions annually. They also provide habitats for various species and contribute significantly to biodiversity.
“Records indicate that the Moreton Bay Fig Tree (Ficus macrophylia) was planted in the late 1880s by Webster in the grounds of his large house. This particular tree is purported to be the progenitor of many of the Moreton Bay Fig trees in Fremantle, including the Proclamation Tree (which was planted in 1890). Webster is also credited with planting the Moreton Bay Fig trees around Kings Square and St John’s Church grounds.”

The proposed demolition threatens not only this individual tree but sets a dangerous precedent for future decisions regarding our natural heritage in Fremantle and beyond. We must stand together as a community and demand that our government prioritize environmental concerns over short-term private financial gains.
We call on the local council to rescind its decision and list back the tree on the registry and reassess their priorities concerning urban development.
We also call on the local council to act on its previous agreement with the owners to assist with the tree maintenance.
Our environment should be cherished, not exploited for profit.
Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving Fremantle's natural heritage and putting environmental concerns before financial gain.
