The Issue

I write as a deeply concerned veterinary technician and animal care volunteer in Wake County. Over years of rescuing and caring for dumped puppies and forgotten senior dogs, I have witnessed first-hand the tragic cycle of purchase to abandonment. An unthinkable number of dogs are currently in shelters, marked for euthanization. This is a heartbreaking plight we face in our pet community. It highlights the urgent need for responsible pet ownership and adoption rather than shopping.

Now, a severe curveball threatens to exacerbate this predicament: The potential opening of a Petopia Puppies storefront, dealing in puppy mill puppies, in downtown Raleigh. This latest development defies all understandings of ethical animal treatment. It promotes the sale of lives, a concept antithetical to the very essence of pet caregiving which upholds life, health, and wellbeing.

Statistics from the Humane Society of the United States reveal about 10,000 puppy mills exist in the U.S, producing over 2 million puppies sold annually. Concurrently, approximately 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in shelters yearly. This stark contrast must be addressed, and actions like these do just the opposite.

Our call is clear: Stop Petopia Puppies from inaugurating their puppy mill storefront. With your support, we can urge our legislators to ensure this ghastly operation never sees the light. It's time to prioritise the lives of pets over profit, the time to adopt and not shop. Our collective voices can make a significant difference in preventing the unscrupulous trade of puppy lives. Let's strengthen our resolve to protect our dear canine friends from such unthinkable futures. Please sign the petition today.
