Re-evaluate the businesses forced to close
Re-evaluate the businesses forced to close
The Issue
This is a plea to reach our elected Government Officials by collecting as many signatures as needed, to urge them to reconsider who can remain open and who are forced to close the doors to their businesses during these difficult and unprecedented times. I am the sole owner /operator of a local Hair Salon in Greater Sudbury. When you choose the career of a Licensed Professional Hairstylist, you receive extensive education in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, and are required to follow strict sanitary practices enforced by law. The use of hospital grade disinfectant and protective equipment is a daily practice in my salon to ensure the safety of my patrons as well as myself. Other Industries including, RMT’s, Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Osteopath’s, Tattoo Parlour's, and many other close contact Professions are schooled in how important it is to prevent the spread of infections and diseases have also been deemed “non essential” and forced to close. We also have regular visits from our local Health Unit to enforce these safety procedures. I believe we can adapt to this “new normal” by offering proactive solutions to help us live with this virus as safely as possible. It is apparent that the “short term” solutions keep extending, with the closures of marinas and campgrounds now in place, that tells us this is months of physical distancing ahead for us. In a what...a couple of months only, these closures have crippled many Industries, the Hair Industry alone contributes over 1.4 Billion to our Canadian Economy and is deemed “non essential”, resulting in permanent closures of many Small Businesses and Salons in our community. This needs to be changed, we have to find ways to start the process of rebuilding our communities. New guidelines added to what is already in place could include : adequate safe space around each person, limiting the amount of people allowed as per square foot, additional sanitation stations upon entering, proper spacing in waiting areas and service areas, temperature readings, providing PPE for patron and Stylist, health screening questions, these are just a few possible solutions that I feel are viable. I want to be clear in saying that I am supporting the efforts from our Government Officials on the recommendations they have put in place, and I am grateful we have Leaders that are truly invested in the health and safety of the public. They are doing their best and making difficult decisions almost daily, and I thank them. I just feel we have to move forward and adapt. I am confident in our Health Officials ability to look at businesses that can safely remain open. Here is where we can push for changes. Please sign and help get the message that there has to be proactive solutions, not reactive responses. If you are still reading this, I thank you for taking the time to read this.
