Prevent the passing of the Interception of Postal Packets and Telecommunication Bill Ghana
The Issue
The Interception of Postal Packets and Telecommunication Bill proposes to allow the National Security or by extension the Government of Ghana the Legal right to tap, listen, record, monitor the telecommunication messages.
This poses significant privacy issues and poses a huge threat to the citizens of Ghana.
There have been documented abuses of such laws in more advanced countries than ours including the United States of America as revealed by Edward Snowden. As a developing country in a continent where Presidents have been known to target dissident citizens, there is no guarantee that this won't be used in the future with malicious intent.
The argument of national security is being used in this case as it was used to get the Patriot Act passed in the United States. However, it has been revealed that majority of targets are innocent businesses which have no official association with terrorism.
While it might seem like a good idea in the fight against crime, securing your communication is trivial and criminals already take steps to cover their tracks. This leaves only innocent citizens who have nothing to hide vulnerable to interception.
We ask the President of the Republic of Ghana to prevent this act from being passed to ensure that our rights to Freedom are not trampled upon.
