Gwynedd Council is considering closing Barmouth Bridge to walkers and cyclists as part of budget cuts.

This spectacular route is a strategic link across the Mawddach estuary, and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Cardigan Bay coastline and Cambrian mountains.

The route is a key part of the Welsh Coastal Path and the National Cycle Network, and attracts in the region of 100,000 users every year, bringing vital economic value to the tourism industry in Barmouth and the wider surrounding area.

Closing this 150-year-old bridge will result in an 18-mile detour, taking walkers and cyclists on to narrow and busy A roads. This will harm the local leisure industry, tourism, and public health and wellbeing.

I was brought up in the area and feel passionately about the importance and value this historic and iconic route holds, having enjoyed walking and cycling across it with my family and friends countless times.  The route is a key transport link enabling local people and visitors to travel actively and sustainably on a safe and beautiful path.

In recognition of the economic and community value of Barmouth Bridge I call on Gwynedd Council to cease considerations of closing this much loved walking and cycling route.
