The issue

The high seas — vast ocean areas beyond any nation's jurisdiction — make up nearly two-thirds of our oceans. They are home to incredible biodiversity, crucial fish stocks, and play a vital role in regulating the global climate. But right now, they’re under serious threat.

Rampant overfishing, deep-sea mining, plastic pollution, and climate-driven impacts like ocean warming and acidification are pushing marine ecosystems to the brink. Without protection, we risk losing species we haven’t even discovered yet — and unraveling the ocean systems that sustain life on Earth.

The High Seas Treaty is a historic global agreement that allows the creation of marine protected areas in international waters, enabling real enforcement and conservation. It’s a critical step in achieving the global goal to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.

Australia helped negotiate this treaty. But we still haven’t ratified it — meaning our country is delaying action and failing to lead on ocean protection.

We, the students of Griffith's Society for Sustainability and Wildlife (GSSW), are calling on the Australian Government to ratify the High Seas Treaty now. We are gathering signatures to present to our local MPs and show that young Australians demand action to protect our oceans.

By signing this petition, you're standing up against destruction and helping to create a thriving, resilient ocean for our future.

The ocean can't wait — join us in making history. Sign now.
