Gills Creek Greenway Proposal Opposition

The Issue

Here we go again! Another boondoggle from County Council. Another misuse of the Penny tax. The Penny tax was created to maintain and improve existing infrastructure not develop one of the pristine areas in our city. Since the October floods our community is in desperate need of infrastructure repair. We have not even finished cleaning up after the flood before they decide to spend much needed money on a project no one has asked for. Let's use those funds to remove the trash all up and down the Gills Creek watershed. Let's use that money to pave dirt roads in the rural part of our county. Even if you don't live in one of the directly affected neighborhoods this project affects all the people of Richland County as council is not repairing infrastructure in other areas but rather have chosen to create a footpath. This footpath will cost millions of dollars to maintain both in policing and physical maintenance not to mention the initial construction costs.  It'll attract people to our quiet neighborhoods at all times of the night. This footpath will disrupt the natural habit of the local wildlife. The homeless and ne'er do well will abuse it as they have on the Columbia side of the river walk. Everyone should be made aware of this misuse of funds. Increased traffic will affect pet owners that walk on the street or children that play in and around the street. Heavy  traffic is not why we moved to these neighborhoods. This Penny sales tax is been mishandled and mismanaged throughout its existence. We need to contact our county councilman and voice our displeasure.
