Green Burial & Conservation Cemetery in California

Green Burial & Conservation Cemetery in California
The Issue
Here in California, we’re a community shaped by the outdoors - from beaches and deserts to forests and mountains. Yet when it comes to our final resting place, our options are out of step with the natural rhythms we live by. Families are often left with choices that rely on concrete vaults, metal caskets, and toxic embalming chemicals - practices that are costly, environmentally harmful, and disconnected from how our bodies are designed to return to the earth.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
A Conservation Cemetery goes beyond green burial. It restores and protects land, preserves wildlife habitat, and creates sacred spaces rooted in ecological care. Conservation burial allows our final act to support renewal rather than depletion, returning our bodies to the earth while protecting the land in perpetuity.
Without change, Californians will continue to face limited end-of-life options that contradict the environmental values and outdoor lifestyle that define our state. By updating policies and cutting through unnecessary red tape, we can create burial spaces that honor both people and the planet.
California is falling behind. Across the country, conservation cemeteries already exist, offering families meaningful, sustainable choices. Here at home, interest is growing among families, environmental advocates, and faith communities who want options that align with both tradition and ecology. Every year we delay, more land is lost to resource-intensive cemetery practices instead of being restored.
Why is it so hard to open a Conservation Cemetery in California?
Right now, the process is unclear and risky. We’ve spoken with the County of San Diego’s zoning department and learned that the only current path forward requires purchasing land, completing costly surveys, and waiting to see if approval is granted. This uncertainty makes it difficult to move forward without clear community support and political will.
That’s why we’re gathering signatures - to demonstrate demand, raise awareness, and bring this issue to city councils and decision-makers. With enough voices behind this effort, we can create a clear, community-supported path forward.
Sign today and help bring Conservation Cemeteries to California.
Together, we can expand end-of-life options that reflect who we are, how we live, and the future we want to protect. 🌿
